Artist’s Statement:

I studied drawing, painting, and sculpture at the Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts for three years and graduated from Brandeis University with a degree in art.  I gave up sculpture for more portable media, but never lost the sculptural awareness of “portraying” an object in space which I have carried over into my drawings and watercolors.
After leaving Boston I got involved in book illustration and photography and for many years worked as an editor of television programs.  I continued to paint still lifes and landscapes and began experimenting with different media and combining them in my paintings.  I continue to work on paper, but now my works bring paper collage, photographs, gold and metallic leaf together with watercolor, drawing, and occasionally egg tempera.
I am influenced by 19th century English and American botanical studies, the small works of Manet, Morandi, and early Spanish still life painters.  Japanese art, Chinese landscape painting, and Persian miniatures are also a source of inspiration to me as is the color and texture of paper itself.  I like to juxtapose the textures, surfaces, and luminances of the various media and to combine the “real” with the abstract.  I seek to change the way a still life or landscape is experienced and to create a sense of peace and unity.
My work is represented in collections throughout the United States and in Europe.  In the fall of 2007 I received an Artist’s Residency and spent six weeks in Venice, Italy.  I returned to Venice for four weeks in the summer of 2009 on a second Artist’s Residency.  Since my first trip, I have continued to explore what inspired me there and have experimented with incorporating the photographs taken in Venice into my new work.
