Statement of Alicia Rothman: My
works are a combination of many techniques I have discovered over years of
making things. I decided to attend
Music & Art High School in NYC to focus on art even at age 15. I received my MFA in printmaking and
drawing. Some of my work has
intricate, detailed patterns which are made by hand.
Recently I have also begun
to experiment with transfer techniques, handmade silkscreens, resist and solvents. Some works are on paper but most are oil on panel. Some patterns are derived from reams of
legal documents which contain endless edits or other repetitive computer
generated patterns.
I
also make stencils, use spray and powder techniques similar to aquatint to
create atmospheric tones and use stamps, combs and scrapers to remove paint. I
use printmaking techniques in the paintings. I try to have spontaneity in the
work alongside intricate patterns.
Influences include ancient
wall paintings, Byzantine, Medieval and Renaissance art in addition to some 20th
century textiles and painting. I
want to combine techniques used 500 years ago with modern methods.
