7th Avenue mixed media Elisa Pritzker Naturalia
Franklin
54 Gallery + Projects is pleased to present in the project space an exhibition
of works by Argentinean born American artist Elisa Pritzker. Represented by the
gallery for 7 years we are proud to be showing her work during the 6th
Annual Latin American Cultural Week produced by PAMAR. Naturalia encompasses works by the artist influenced by her
natural surroundings. She is imposing real photographic imagery with collage
pieces to complete intriguing images of the real and non-real. As always her
work is crisp and clean. 4 Deer in Winter is a magnificent piece of 3 deer in
the background in a snow field scene and then in the front she has introduced a
red deer against the fine grays and whites of the picture – it is stark but
fits in well.
Also
included in the show are pieces from her earlier “Zipped” series that continue
to fascinate and bring to mind so many meanings and contrasts. Fun new pieces
include the 7th Avenue trunks made from real tree trunks and
bejeweled with shiny crystals, zippers and fake fur. The small trunks are
precious.
A
serious prolific artist, Elisa is currently in a 2-person exhibition at
Skylight Gallery on W. 29th St. and has 2 major solo exhibitions in
Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2012.

LOCAL ARTIST
RECLAIMS TRASH ON NEW YORK STREETS FOR USE IN FINE ART EXHIBIT
Cuban-born artist,
JAVA, creates body of work inspired by Santeria religion and his passion for
recyclable material
New York, New York – January 25, 2011 - Franklin 54 Gallery
+ Projects presents: “Santeria”; a found object sculpture exhibit, showing from
Saturday, February 12 to Sunday, February 13, 2011, 12-5PM, with an opening
reception on Friday, February 11, 2011, 6-9PM in the West Chelsea Arts
Building, while also premiering “Beauty in Everything”; a short documentary
about the artist and his work, by Robert Horvath of DÉVA.
Russian-born filmmaker Mr. Horvath, was
inspired by JAVA’s show of found object sculptures that he saw at Franklin 54 Gallery in March 2010. When the artist saw the documentary he was moved to create a new body
of work reminiscent of the mystique and beauty of Santeria, a religion in Cuba
that has influenced JAVA’s artistic expression since childhood.
The dynamic use of found objects in all the work and the
artist’s love for garbage and recyclable materials, which trace back to his
Castro post-revolutionary Cuba when money and supplies were scarce, if not
unavailable, makes for a visually stunning show. In a statement by JAVA regarding his work, he says, “I know
this beautiful blue planet where we live will one day be a dump…It’s up to us
to save it by using our imagination.”
Using everything from crushed cans to abandoned wood, JAVA
“places everything exactly where it should be”, states Joyce Pommer, gallery
owner. His attitude of “one man’s
trash is another man’s treasure” is a wonderful one that he takes seriously in
his dedication to the work.
JAVA is a self-taught artist, born and raised in Cuba, now
living and working in New York. He
has been featured in “Reclaimed”, a 2010 group show of artists who use recycled
material, at the Southwest Minnesota State University Art Museum. His work was chosen for the 2009
National Payroll Week campaign and has been included in many exhibitions in
Cuba, Italy, Miami and New York City.

Press Release: Latin Art Experience:
3 contemporary artists JAVA Elisa Pritzker Fernando Rangel Curated by Jennifer Groves
November 5, 2010 –
January 31, 2011
Franklin 54 Gallery + Projects is pleased to
present an offsite exhibition of 3 of our contemporary Latin American artists.
From November 10-17th, Franklin 54 Gallery is
a proud participant in the 5th Annual Latin American Cultural Week,
produced by PAMAR (www.LACW.net).
Cuban artist JAVA lives and works in Brooklyn and his work is
greatly influenced from growing up in Cuba. Always near the sea, the fish and
the water are prominent in his work as is often a religious influence. There is
a story to be found whether it is in his paintings, mosaics or found object
sculptures. His amazing found object sculptures are full of life, intricate
details and materials yet they consistently come together as a complete vision.
No matter how many pieces are there, they are all in the “right” place.
Elisa Pritzker is an American artist born in Argentina - she lives
and works in the Hudson Valley. Elisa also “tells a story” exquisitely and
expertly but in minimal fashion, telling much with so little. Her concepts are
intriguing and capture the viewer’s eye drawing them in to think, imagine and
explore further. Her new “Zipped” series is an exciting one – the zipper
divides, opens, closes and reveals contrasting ideas and situations and we are
left to wonder or conjure up our own story and travel on a surprising journey.
Fernando
Rangel was born in Colombia
and currently lives in New York. His free-floating abstracts are dreamlike and
mesmerizing. From his statement Rangel says: “these images
carry the knowledge and sensitivity of a 20-year study of light and nature in
oil painting, resulting in an intimate marriage between the ancient medium of
watercolor and technological advances in digital photography. The subject in
the photo is a temporary manipulated paper with spontaneous splashes of color
and water infused with carefully composed lighting. The result is a
contemplation of the present moment, a record of a state of “no mind”…
We wish to thank Curator Jennifer
Groves for this opportunity
